About Me

My name is Natasha Lyons. I am from a small town in Upstate New York called Fonda-Fultonville. I cannot remember a time that I did not want to be a teacher. From a young age, I would play school with my younger cousin and stuffed animals. Now, as I enter into the professional teaching world, I hope to make a difference in the lives of students.  I would like to teach students in a low socioeconomic community so that I can get students excited about learning and plant a seed in them that makes them love to learn! I will be avaliable for hire starting January 2015 and I am open to teach anywhere!

Teaching Experiences

I have had several different teaching experiences while I was a student at Appalachian State University. I interned in an afterschool program twice a week. Here, I tutored students ranging from first grade all the way through fifth grade. I also served as a mentor figure to these students. At this afterschool program, I also taught a lesson on snow. Another teaching experience that I had was working with struggling readers in a first grade classroom. I would go in to the classroom three times a week and pull aside the struggling readers and read a book with them. My most recent teaching experience came from my internship during block 1. I interned at Moravian Falls Elementary School in Moravian Falls, NC. This elementary school is located in Wilkes County. I interned in a first and second grade combination classroom. My supervising teacher was Rosanna Bare. During this internship, I went four Friday's throughout the semester as well as every Tuesday and Thursday for five weeks. During my time here, I was in the classroom for the entire day helping out the teacher in any way I could. I was in charge of different centers, kept the class in an ordered manner when needed, ate lunch with the students, and just acted as another teacher in the classroom.

Volunteer Experiences

Some volunteer activities that I have participated in include:

  • The Special Olympics

  • Working with English Language Learners outside of the classroom

  • Charlotte Rescue Mission through Elevation Church

  • Weekly volunteer with Elevation Church

  • Highway Clean-Ups

  • Operation Christmas Child

Service Learning

During my time at Appalachian State University, I completed thirty hours of service learning. During these service learning experiences, I worked with English Language Learners, special needs students, and struggling students. I really enjoyed my time in these different internship roles because I was able to be more of a mentor to the students that I worked with.
